Rwanda Welcomes 1.36 Million Tourists in 2024 Amid Efforts to Diversify Offerings

Due to its significant contribution to the national economy, Rwanda has opted to diversify its tourism offerings. Policies implemented in recent years have helped the country reach 1.36 million visitors in 2024.

This figure was driven by several growing segments, according to the Rwanda Development Board. Wildlife tourism, particularly gorilla trekking, saw a 27% increase. Additionally, international events—such as conferences and exhibitions—boosted tourist volumes. A total of 115 events were hosted in the country, attracting over 52,000 participants.

This performance generated $647 million in total revenue, including $84.8 million from event tourism alone. However, the overall number of tourists in 2024 remains below pre-pandemic levels, as Rwanda had recorded 1.6 million visitors in 2019.

For 2025, Rwanda is targeting $700 million in tourism revenue and is banking on flagship events such as the 20th edition of the Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony and the UCI Road World Championships to help meet that goal.

As part of its Vision 2030 strategy, the government is relying on sector diversification to attract more visitors. New offerings are expected to include business tourism, safaris, birdwatching, and forest hikes. Notably, Rwanda’s tourism industry generated over $600 million in revenue in 2023, accounting for nearly 11% of GDP. Looking ahead, this figure is expected to surpass $1 billion by 2028/2029.
