Benin – Urban Tourism: Cotonou’s Little Tourist Train Officially Inaugurated

Cotonou, Benin’s metropolis, has taken a new step in promoting its tourism offering with the official inauguration of the “Little Tourist Train of Cotonou” on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Place de l’Amazone. Led by the tourism agency Dahomey Discovery, with the support of the Government through Benin Tourism Agency, the project is part of a broader effort to showcase urban heritage and diversify tourist experiences.

Designed as a modern tool for discovering Benin’s economic capital, the Little Tourist Train aims to highlight Cotonou’s iconic and historic sites, while telling the story, culture, and identity of the city through structured and accessible routes, noted Mrs. Zoulfati DERBY, Managing Director of Dahomey Discovery.

Thanks to a circuit carefully designed to combine education and entertainment, the train allows passengers to discover Cotonou from a new perspective, in a safe and friendly setting. This innovation was warmly welcomed by the representative of the Mayor of Cotonou, Mr. Samuel AKINDÈS.

The project stands out for its immersive and playful character, offering an experience suited to a wide range of audiences. It targets families seeking cultural leisure activities; national and international tourists eager to better understand the city; school groups, from an educational and knowledge-sharing perspective; as well as companies, for institutional outings or team-building activities. This inclusive approach helps broaden access to urban tourism and strengthens local communities’ connection to their heritage.

For Mrs. Gwladys GANDAHO, representing the Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, by supporting this project the Government reaffirms its commitment to making tourism a genuine driver of economic and cultural development. The Little Tourist Train of Cotonou thus fits into a broader strategy to boost tourism offerings, create jobs, and promote the city’s image at both national and international levels.

The initiative led by Dahomey Discovery also highlights the key role of the private sector in tourism innovation and the sustainable enhancement of urban assets.

With the launch of the Little Tourist Train, Cotonou now boasts a modern and attractive tool that strengthens its position as a must-visit urban destination.

This project opens new prospects for local tourism and contributes to building a more attractive, accessible city focused on showcasing its heritage.
