Benin – Construction of the International Vodun Museum: Government Reviews Progress of Works in Porto-Novo

This field visit is part of the close monitoring of major cultural projects undertaken by the Government of Benin.

On Thursday, November 27, 2025, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Mr. Jean-Michel ABIMBOLA, carried out a field inspection of the construction site of the International Vodun Museum (MIV), located at the entrance to the city of Porto-Novo. This visit is part of the close monitoring of major cultural projects initiated by the Government of Benin.

Accompanied by the President’s Special Adviser, Mr. Alain GODONOU, and several technical officials from the ministry, the Minister came to assess the progress of works on this vast cultural complex, built on a surface area of approximately one and a half hectares.

On site, a brief working session was held with the companies in charge of the project. Discussions focused on the physical execution rate, identified points requiring attention, and certain technical matters that need specific follow-up. After these exchanges, the ministerial delegation toured all sections of the project—from the reception hall to the auditorium, the Afro-Brazilian building, the calabash-shaped structures, and the workshops planned for museographic purposes.

The visit also extended to Toffa Square, where the statue of King Toffa stands. The Minister and his delegation carefully examined each part of the site, ensuring that the work complies with international standards and faithfully reflects the Government’s ambition to equip Benin with a landmark museum dedicated to Vodun.
